Filming Plan 2

Our first attempt at filming didn't quite go to plan, so we have arranged to film on the 23rd and 24th of November. This time around, we have a better plan and new locations which hopefully should be successful. If unsuccessful, we can always film again on a different day, but seeing as we have planned to film for 2 days, it should be ok.

9:00 - 10:00 - Pick everyone up

10:00 - 10:30 - Breakfast stop and pick up spare batteries for the camera

10:30 - 11:15 - Find the location in Woodford

11:15 - 1:00 - Film as much footage as possible

1:00 - 1:30 - Lunch

1:30 - 4:00 - Carry on filming

4:00 - 4:30 - Quickly look over what we have filmed

4:30 - 5:15 - Drop everyone home

The diary above will be repeated on Thursday as well. Due to certain unexpected problems we have to allow for, the times may change, but that is the schedule we plan to go by for the day.

Finalised Storyboard

Here is our final storyboard which we will carefully follow throughout our re-shoot. Having not actually been to our location yet we will probably still make slight adjustments to our shots and improvise as we may have better ideas while actually there. This is because we have only seen the area from google earth, so have purely planned our shots from images of the estate.

Below is a video explaining our storyboard and what shots we hope to achieve and explanation of our decision to choose the shots we have done.

Finalised Location

After our first day of filming we decided that we needed a better location to shoot. An urban estate we discovered in Woodford fitted perfectly for the setting of our music video. Vaguely knowing the location already, instead of going out to explore the location we used Google Earth in our lesson to further investigate the area. From this,we gathered several screen shots and were able to plan beforehand the shots we could use there. By using Google Earth we could also come up with ideas of how we could frame the environment in captivating ways to make it look more interesting. This also saved us plenty of time which we needed.

Re-Shoots

We have decided to re shoot from our first day's filming. We were not completely satisfied with our location and so decided we needed to search for a better location to suit our genre more. Also we have slightly altered our story to also be more realistic and more suited to the song, but have kept the main theme of the main character "getting nowhere" but this time it being more obvious and suited to the location and genre. Problems with our first shoot included not properly understanding the themes we were trying to create through lack of communication with the group. For our second shoot there is now a full understanding of themes and conventions of the genre we are creating and a solid storyline and board to follow. We still plan on keeping some of the footage we gathered from our first day of filming such as the establishing shots as they will not affect the story itself.

First Day Filming

Thursday 10th November, we started to film our music video. After having a plan on what we had to do, we actually didn't get too much filming done. We spent a lot of the time getting establishing shots for the beginning of the song and didn’t get any footage for the middle of the song. The shots we did get did end up looking quite good, but we most definitely will need to shoot on another day.

The location we shot at was at Warley and did actually fit in quite well with the mise en scene. We were there the majority of the day but also drove around trying to find other locations. We went to Hutton and found quite a good alley way to do a short scene in. It is quite enclosed and fits well with what we had planned.

For costume, Tom bought 3 pairs of jeans and I bought 4 hoody’s and 3 pairs of trainers. We wanted to keep the costumes similar but also different. We thought the costume was good for the music video and the idea of keeping the same sort of outfit was best.

What we Plan to do on our Filming Day(s)

We plan to start filming on Thursday and during that time, find a suitable location and with the time left, shoot as much footage as possible. Because of the short daylight hours we may have to shoot Saturday or Sunday as well.

We do hope to find a location pretty early into Thursday so that we can film as much as possible. We think parts of Romford and Chelmsford will be good to film in as they're relatively close and some parts could be quite good to film in.

We are aware that we will possibly need more than one costume so we can choose amongst our group what we plan to dress the main character in this week prior to days we are going to film on.

On both days we will bring a camera to take pictures for the blog. We can then track progress of where we got up to and which locations we used.

Progess So Far

Work to date on the blog so far has been good. We have done many posts representing market research and developing an understanding of our audience. We have used many evaluative techniques to describe our audience such as Maslow's Hierachy of Needs and psychographics and demographics. This has helped to show clearly who we are targeting for our production, and finding institutions to feature our music video on has helped with finding an audience for us. We have also developed a good understanding of music videos and the genre of our song, through textual analysis of music videos within the same or similar genre; which has helped us storyboard a good storyline for our production.

We have had to make many changes throughout our production so far, particularly with our choice of song and storyboard. We initially decided to do Chase and Status - Embrace, but then decided that the song did not have enough meaning for our desired ideas of a struggle with life. We then did further song research and found Getting Nowhere by Magnetic Man, with the lyrics having much more meaning to our potential ideas. We have also changed many ideas within our storyboard, ranging from our main character having a drug problem, selling drugs, being involved with prostitutes and if he should die at the start or the beginning. After much debate and discussion within our group, we have decided and now finalised a storyboard.

To move forward with our production we need to start filming and finalise locations and costumes. We already have many ideas on locations and costumes and we now need to get out to these locations and film our scenes. We hope to be filming by 6th of November and will have finished filming by the following week.
