Codes and Conventions of a Genre

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music. Its main features include overwhelming bass lines and occasional vocals as its mostly instrumental. The wobble bass is another main characteristic you would expect in most Dubstep. This style of bass is a driving factor in some variations of Dubstep. Many Dubstep tracks incorporate one or more "bass drops", a characteristic inherited from drum and bass. Typically, the percussion will pause, often reducing the track to silence, and then resume with more intensity, accompanied by a dominant sub bass. Our song though 'Getting Nowhere' is not something you would typically expect from a Dubstep song as its more 'sleepy' because of its slower and calmer vibe. This helps to give the song some emotion which we can incorporate into our video by telling a story.

Some Dubstep artists have also incorporated a variety of outside influences such as House and even Heavy Metal. Dubstep is also widely promoted through the use of the Internet and radio but gains less exposure on TV. Magnetic Man reached number 10 in the UK singles chart in 2010, this presented a turning point in the popularity of mainstream Dubstep amongst UK listeners. Dubstep has continued to grow with recent artists such as Nero and Skrillex who have helped gain popularity. DJ Fresh's track 'Louder' hit number 1 in the UK singles chart, becoming the first ever Dubstep track to achieve this.
