All artists who produce new records accompany the song with a video. This video adds different entertainment value to an already listened too song. When we come to the making of our own music video we must first analyse a successful music production. The song chosen for our year is a song which hit number one in the charts and which is called ‘Toxic’.
Toxic" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears from her fourth album, In the Zone. It was released on January 12, 2004, by Jive Records as the second single from the album.
"Toxic" attained worldwide success, reaching the top-five in fifteen countries, while topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it became her first single to peak inside the top ten in almost four years.
Genre:
"Toxic" is a dance-pop song with elements of electro pop and bhangra music. It features varied instrumentation, such as drums, synthesizers and high-pitched strings.
Lyrics:
With a taste of your lips
I'm on a ride
With a taste of poison paradise
I'm addicted to you
Don't you know that you're toxic?
And I love what you do
Don't you know that you're toxic?
It's getting late
To give you up
I took a sip from my devil cup
Slowly, it's taking over me
Too high, can't come down
It's in the air
And it's all around
Can you feel me now?
The lyrics for this pop song establish the point that Britney wants to express her sexuality and to be seen as more of an adult. This establishing the point that Britney is now ready to move into the more ‘adult persona’.
This point also combines with the subject of Voyeurism in which Britney is sexualised as an object to be looked at and appraised. Due to the fact that she wears a near nude suit throughout the video highlights the pop music’s desire to sell sexuality to a young appealing audience.
However contradicting the norm of women in society Britney is shown through the whole video as the dominant protagonist, for example throughout the video Britney has control over every single man she becomes familiar with.
Editing / Locations
Due to the fact of the music video being that of the pop genre, the video must uphold certain factors.
Location: As a general pop video goes the change of locations and type of locations change dramatically to keep the audience entertained. In the video Toxic the locations vary from a jet plane to a busy city. The editing is also very fast paced and upholds the general stereotypes of a pop hit. The use of sharp shots and rapid editing also combines well with the lyrics in order to complete a successful video.
